Wk6 – Art Experience – Photowalk

I am one of the guide for the Photowalk session.

I planned to led my classmate down to the close to the engineering building, the walk way to Brotman Hall.

Over there, there are tons of trees and that is a great place for photography.

Many students have actually been there or even pass by everyday, but I just want my classmate to take a moment and notice the details of the campus.

Nowadays people are always walking while looking down at their smartphones, I wish they could take a moment and look up once in a while and enjoy the beauty that we already owned in nature.

Here is the photos that I have got on Thursday.

When I am taking picture of the trees, I tend to move my camera upwards about 30 to 45 degrees in order to capture more of the trees through my camera lens.

While I was walking on the walk way, I take a step further to check out the H2O fountain in CSULB, and surprisingly, I found two ducks!

Two beautiful ducks with pretty fur!

Overall, the walk was relaxing and I was able to slow my pace down in the exam week and take a moment for photography this amazing natural side of CSULB.

Wk5 -Art Experience – Cuisine

Thai food – “Tom Yum Mee Hoon”(Tom Yum soup noodles 🍜) is one of my favorite food back in Malaysia!

This is different from the famous Vietnamese “Pho” we have here in California, the soup of this cuisine is RED! and it isn’t spicy!

*Picture from the internet. *

And today I will try my best to cook it!

I went to the Asian market and found this special paste- The “Tom Yum” paste for the soup!

The ingredients you need for this cuisine is:

  • Rich Stick
  • Tom Yum paste

Step1 – Boil the water, and add the rice stick in the pot.

Step2- Once the rice stick became softer, add the vegetables and musrooms

Artist: Kristi Jensen

Exhibition: Fuse: Join To Form: Single Entity
Media: Sterling Silver, Cooper, Gold Leaf, Cloisonné Enamel, Steel
Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery East
Website: Artist have no website.
Instagram: whipperton

About the Artist

Ms. Jensen is an undergraduate student at CSULB. She is currently working on her undergraduate degree in Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, Metals and Jewelry and she have one more semester left until her graduation.

Due to the fact that she is a returning student, therefore, she is a lot elder than the other students in her class. She used to worked as a flight attendant for approximately 8 years before she decides to come back to college.

Ms. Jensen admitted that she loves to make and create things, she loves to learn all sorts of technique and try to combine the basic technique that she have learned into each and every single art pieces she is creating. Long in short, she loves to experiments on art techniques.

The time she used to create each of her art pieces for this exhibition is approximately 3 weeks.

Formal Analysis

image

There are a total of 4 art pieces that Ms. Jensen have created is placed in the CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery East.  But Ms. Jensen’s favorite out of all is this colorful necklace.

image

image

The shape of the pendent of the jewelry is semi-circular. Which for me, it looks like a rose’s flower pedal.

The colors of the pendent of the jewelry are blue, purple, and green. ; The color of the plain necklace of the jewelry is silver.

The scale of the sculpture is small as it is a jewelry.

The texture of the sculpture is smooth.

Content Analysis

Ms. Jensen’s grandfather used to fix televisions when she was young and the image of how her grandfather used building and putting every parts together and formed a working television got stuck in her head, thereby it inspired Ms. Jensen to start creating things of her very own. She love to use different techniques to create her art pieces. And each of her art pieces is an experiment for her, she is trying to add new thing, combining few different techniques and create an unique piece.

My Experience

I am interested in jewelry just like any girls do, the exhibition was amazing, I got to see some kind of jewelry that I thought can only be seen on TV! Ms. Jenson’s work is amazing, especially the colorful necklace that she have created. I asked her on for price for it and she told me it is $325! Without doubt, creating jewelry is expansive, Ms. Jenson added that she spend almost all of her Christmas money, New year money into buying the tools and material to create her art piece.

I like the fact that Ms. Jensen ‘s way of creating stuff with combining different techniques. It made me realized that arts is just like sciences, it required a number of experiments or trials in order to acquire the best result possible!

Enrique Plascencia

He is currently working on his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing & Painting and this will he his last semester here in CSULB.

For his very last semester, he is still taking 4 classes (12units in total) *A full time student!*

Besides of being a full-time student here in CSULB, he also has a full time job in the movie theater – Bianchi theater in Paramount, CA. He mentioned that it is hard for me have both full time status since he need to work 5 days a week while coming to class and finish his assignments.

As a “victim” of the commuter system of CSULB, he likes close to Lakewood and he come to college by public transport. *Just like me! TvT*

Upon his graduation, he wish he could start selling T-shirts with his very own design and make money out of it. In the mean time, he also wish to learn more about Photoshop that would help him in his future T-shirt selling career.

Surprisingly enough, Mr. Plascencia is also one of the artist for the particular exhibition we are attending this week!

Wk4 – Artist Conversation – Samuel Jernigan

Artist: Samuel Jernigan

Exhibition: Weight of  Whimsy and Ideals
Media: Ceramics, Clay, Woods, Steel
Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery West
Website: cargocollective.com/samueljernigan
Instagram: samueljenri

About the Artist

Mr. Jernigan Was a student in CSULB. He have gotten his undergraduate degree in Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, Ceramics last semester, Fall 2015. Due to his special concentration, the main material he uses to create most of the pieces by him is Ceramic. Other than Ceramics, he did use other materials to enhance the look of his art piece, such as: clay, paints, woods, steel. The wood and steel he used to create a platform for his ceramic sculptures, he added that both the base and the ceramic sculptures represent the entire art work; as the sculptures will look different without it.

The time he used to create all the ceramic sculptures this time was 4 months.

image

Formal Analysis

It is a couple of sculpture made of mainly ceramics by Mr. Jernigan , but the one that caught my eye was a special doll-like head of a human. Mr. Jernigan sculpture protrayed a huge doll-like human face.

The shape of the entire figure seems anhuman.d, just like a toy. Mr. Jernigan got his idea and inspirations from toys. Apart from that, Mr. Jernigan added that comics have also inspired him in his work mentally. Therefore the ceramics sculpture he have created is always doll-like.

The scale of the sculpture is huge for a human head.

There are multiple colors Mr. Jernigan used on the ceramic sculpture. Only half of the doll`s face was painted. Mr. Jernigan added that the reason behind it is to allow the audiences to use their imagination to identify the doll`s gender.

The texture of the sculpture is smooth as it is a representation of a human.

Content Analysis

Mr. Jernigan got his idea from traditional toys and dolls. He added that his background as a musician have helped him along the way while create his art pieces. Apart from that, Mr. Jernigan also admitted that comics have inspired him mentally. Mr. Jernigan is trying to remind his audience of their childhood and give out each and every single one of our own opinion about his art pieces.

My Experience

I have found my childhood here! There are so many familiar toys and dolls sculptures that I myself could relate to. Meanwhile, Mr. Jernigan have added his own idea and recreates the toys or dolls that we used to see when we were small. Without any doubt, he is an interesting and talented artist!

Nowadays, with the advancements of technology, the 00’s kids are no longer like us – playing with “traditional” dolls, toys, play outside. Instead, they would just spend most of their times indoors, with their eyes on their smartphones or tablets.

It is crazy to think about how much technology have evolved, and it is even crazier to think about how much have it changes our life. Mr. Jernigan’s art is great as it reminds his audiences the special childhood that we once had.

Here is the final result to my painting.
Comment: it is a MESS. 😭

I feel glad that i didn’t do it in public because i think that would be embarrassing. 😥

I have watched the tutorial video and ttried my best to make them look bubble-font.
But i guess i failed 50% of it. =X

This is my very first time spray painting and i find it hard to hold the spray can and draw at the same time, as my tiny hand couldnt hold the spray cans well thereby harder to control.

image

Picture of my and my painting *It is sooo hard to selfie with my name and my face! :(*

Overall i think it is a fun experience. It is always good to try new thing! 😜
