Ms Sainz is a 5th year, senior student in the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Illustration / Animation program. This is her last semester and she will be graduating in May.

Ms Sainz have been interested in drawing and painitng at a very young age, and she love to draw cartoony stuffs, such as mermaid etc. Therefore, she have decided to enroll in the Illustration / Animation program. The first time she applied she did not get in, but after some effort, she got in the program with her second try. 🙂

Formal Analysis

This exhibition is full of great paintings and art pieces! Ms Sainz’s art pieces are really cute that it caught my eyes.

Here are some of the pictures:

The shape of the pieces are a perfect square as they are frammed.

The colors of the art pieces that Ms.Sainz created are colorful..

The scale of the art pieces comes in variety of sizes, majority of them are small.

The texture of the art pieces are smooth, as they are all printed/ painted on the paper.

Content Analysis

Ms Sainz have always love to draw, plus the fact that she is always hanging around with art kids therefore it got her inspired. When she is a Junior in High School, she joined the Art club and became the president of the club! This pushes her to enroll in the painting and drawing major, but she realized that she do not like drawing observational stuff but rather, she loves drawing cartoony stuffs. Therefore she decided that she wanted to become a Caricature Artist!

On one of her piece, the professor asked her to be more careful and pay attention on the line work and line quality. This is what she came up with, a 15 minutes sketch. Ms Sainz mentioned that, a work done within 15 minutes might be better than the work done within 2 hours as the longer the artist focus on painting it, the higher the chance for it to go “overload”.

Also, the thing she draw defined and illustrates about her and her emotion, on one art piece, she created a drawing with coffee and tea. The drawing illustrate the passing of her beloved dog. Which seems sad and monotone. 😦

My Experience

Interviewing a Caricature Artist Ms Sainz is something that I have not done before. It is the kind of art pieces I have seen on often either on real of virtual life. When I saw her art, I was like “WOW! “.

With some explanation from ms Sainz i get to know that majority of her art pieces a first draw with her hand, and then color them with traditional watercolor, then edit them with photoshop digitally, and finally, print it.

She also mentioned that it is not cheap to create the art pieces, as sometimes the material would cost her $$$. For example, one of her colorful printing cost her $8 just to print it out, and that is consider as cheap as she size is small.

I was amazed about her art, even her name card, it looks soo cute !

I like this exhibition 😀

Artist:Brianna Joy

Exhibition: Merge
Media: BFK printmaking paper, Screen paint
Gallery: CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery East

About the Artist

MS. Joy is an undergraduate student at CSULB. She is currently working on her undergraduate degree in Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, in Printmaking.

Ms. Joy have mentioned that she was from small community, it is a place where the population was under 1,000 and there no cellphones was used.  Ms. Joy experiences culture shock when she moved here, thereby gaining more of a diverse experience as she lived in the two extremely different society. For this exhibition, she is trying to merging her past and her present together.

Formal Analysis

It is the very first time I was saw the printmaking art pieces. It was a super huge printing on a super huge paper. I was amazed by the fact that, this is what college student or everyone do every semester or everyday, printing out the documents or assignments, but I have never though that it could also be a form of art.

Ms. Joy admitted that her work is very figurative, as for this exhibition alone she have 3 out of 7 figurative art pieces.

Ms. Joy’s favorite piece is this:

She explained that she likes the line consistency and meanwhile she was amazed that she were able to make the lines so close together, which represents a sense of value when only one black ink is used.

The shape of the art pieces are rectangular.

The colors of the art pieces are black and white.

The scale of the art pieces are huge.

The texture of the sculpture is smooth. But I find it fun as when you look at it, it looks like it isn’t smooth due to the special ink design.

Content Analysis

The culture shock Ms. Joy experiences brings her the create the art pieces that represent both of her past and her present. Her idea of merging these two together is rather interesting.

She mentioned that back there in her past, everyone in the community knows each other well and it is easier to establish relationships and bonds with other people. But when she came here, she notices that people are not as open and meanwhile, they do not let their guards down easily which is one the problem she faced. But finally, she realized there is also a form of beauty in this society, – People do cherished their existing relationships and bonds a lot more.

My Experience

This was the very first time I see the huge paper printing art. Although printing is a part of our daily task, but creating an art piece out of printing is not easy. According to Ms. Joy, she must be extremely be careful while she is creating her art piece, as they cost a lot. She said, it is like $100 bucks gone if she messes up during the printing process.

Meanwhile, she is using the BFK printmaking paper, she added that she will need to buy them in huge rolls as this kind of huge paper is hard to find. The ink that she used is water based in order to be more environmental friendly.

I have understand the struggle to create an art pieces and the hard work they put in to create them. Not only that it cost them a lot but in the mean time they will also have to pay a lots of attention be really careful while creating it.

Today, I understand that printing, is not easy.

There are a total of 4 art pieces that Ms. Jensen have created is placed in the CSULB School of Art, Gatov Gallery East.  But Ms. Jensen’s favorite out of all is this colorful necklace.

The shape of the pendent of the jewelry is semi-circular. Which for me, it looks like a rose’s flower pedal.

The colors of the pendent of the jewelry are blue, purple, and green. ; The color of the plain necklace of the jewelry is silver.

The scale of the sculpture is small as it is a jewelry.

The texture of the sculpture is smooth.

Content Analysis

Ms. Jensen’s grandfather used to fix televisions when she was young and the image of how her grandfather used building and putting every parts together and formed a working television got stuck in her head, thereby it inspired Ms. Jensen to start creating things of her very own. She love to use different techniques to create her art pieces. And each of her art pieces is an experiment for her, she is trying to add new thing, combining few different techniques and create an unique piece.

My Experience

I am interested in jewelry just like any girls do, the exhibition was amazing, I got to see some kind of jewelry that I thought can only be seen on TV! Ms. Jenson’s work is amazing, especially the colorful necklace that she have created. I asked her on for price for it and she told me it is $325! Without doubt, creating jewelry is expansive, Ms. Jenson added that she spend almost all of her Christmas money, New year money into buying the tools and material to create her art piece.

I like the fact that Ms. Jensen ‘s way of creating stuff with combining different techniques. It made me realized that arts is just like sciences, it required a number of experiments or trials in order to acquire the best result possible!
